Columbus and the Indians

In this rather educational video, that many teachers might use as a resource to introduce Christopher Columbus in their classrooms. I think this video is very tricky, because it shares out details about Columbus's voyage and the people that he admired. Although it is mentioned in this video how his people took the island from the Indians, gold, and made some slaves, it somewhat still made him seem like he did something great by "discovering" the Americas. This focuses heavily on what he and his people did as far as travel plans, what islands they found and the main goal which was return gold to Spain. However, I do think that for children is hard to teach the ugly, dark, and reality of who Columbus really was. Therefore, I believe it should be a topic that schools should not touch heavily on, or even mentioned due to the harsh reality of all the damage he caused and the horror his troops caused. As a child I too thought Columbus was this great explorer who made this discovery for the better of many societies. Now as an adult I have come to realize that I have been lied to my entire childhood and that not everything I have been taught is real. I think students should be able to either know the truth or teachers should just mention the bad things this explorer caused during his voyages.
